Derek Gamlin

Gamlin Restaurant Group
Growing up in the St. Louis, Derek Gamlin and his brothers always had a competitive camaraderie — and as the oldest, he was never shy to accept a challenge. After years of dreaming about it, his brothers challenged him to open his first establishment, he took the entrepreneurial plunge into the world of restaurant ownership, with his brother Lucas, when Sub Zero Vodka Bar opened its doors in 2004.

Derek wasn’t new to the hospitality industry. He had his first management job at 14 years old, managing his parent’s Haagen-Dazs franchise in downtown Clayton, and worked in restaurants and bars throughout and after college. While working behind the bar, and as a manager, he knew he wanted his own place to welcome guests, provide them with a great experience and make them feel like they were at home.

Since 2004, Gamlin Restaurant Group has expanded to include three award-winning restaurants, including Sub Zero Vodka Bar, the city’s first and only dedicated vodka bar, and home to the country’s largest selection of vodkas; Gamlin Whiskey House, an upscale steakhouse with more than 250 bottles of whiskey lining its walls; and 1764 Public House, a neighborhood destination with a menu influenced by classic St. Louis foods and traditional New Orleans flavors.

From the beginning, Derek has been focused on more than creating memorable dining and drinking concepts; he has a lifelong commitment to making St. Louis better. He is an active board member of the Central West End Community Improvement District, and with Lucas, started the Gamlin Gives Back program. The mission of Gamlin Gives Back is simple; they want to improve the quality of life in the neighborhoods where they open their doors. Since starting in 2013, Gamlin Gives Back has donated thousands of dollars to local organizations such as Forest Park Forever, The Gateway Area Chapter of the National MS Society and Ronald McDonald House Charities® of St. Louis.

An avid sports fan, Derek has also partnered his establishments with some of the city’s top sports franchises, including the St. Louis Cardinals and St. Louis Blues. He is known throughout the city for providing unique drinking and dining experiences that help guests understand and appreciate the nuances of the spirits featured at his establishments. He and his brother, Lucas, are founding members of the Missouri Whiskey Society.

Just as when he was young, family is the foundation of his success. With the support of his wife and four children his entrepreneurial spirit continues to grow as he thinks of the next great thing to hit the St. Louis dining and entertainment scene.
